Cover Letter Guide

Team Prosple

Curated together by our graduates and in-house talent acquisition team.

Tips to get started

Cover letters give employers an insight into your personality and passions. They also show the employer your communication skills as well as your attention to detail.

  • Show passion and enthusiasm. Tailoring your cover letter to the employer may take time but it is well worth it and puts you ahead of the competition.
  • Keep cover letters to 1-page maximum.
  • Research the employer - read the advert and role requirements. Visit the company website. Show up to company events and talk to employees of the company.
  • Check grammar, punctuation and spelling – especially the role title and company name (We suggest you copy and paste this directly from the advert!).
  • Use clean, easy-to-read font.
  • Highlight why you want that job and why you want to work for the company.
  • Mention any projects that inspire you. Are there any projects that you have worked on that relate to the employers’ projects?
  • Are there any company values that resonate with you?
  • Are there any papers at the university that you enjoy/enjoyed that are relative to the role?
  • When applying for a particular business unit e.g., the Transport team at Stantec. Tell us what inspired you to become a civil engineer in transportation.

Optional Information

  • Include preferred work locations. Are you open to relocation?
  • Preferred start date
