Pros & Cons

  • There is a great workplace atmosphere, a lot of different events to get evolved in and everyone is very friendly and helpful.
  • The exposure to different work, and getting to know lots of people in the office that are my age and on a similar level.
  • Being a part of a large recognised company which means there is plenty of networking and social opportunities to meet people and connect. There is plenty of fun social activities with your direct and wider teams and also firm wide. This makes BDO a fun company to work for as the culture is good.
  • The diversity and openness, it also allows for individuals like me fresh out of university to experience working life and grow within a big company.
  • The community
  • The slow points when there is not a lot of work
  • Graduate salary is low (it's higher end of market rate so not low in comparison to other accounting grads, but low in general)
  • In contrast to the best thing being plenty of people this can also be a negative as it can be easy to feel overlooked and missed out. So be sure to get involved when you can so you meet people because it will make work more enjoyable.
  • Adjusting to working life and finding good balance with work and study
  • Difficult to park in city center.

Culture
The culture in and outside the office is great. All people are always willing to help out, join in, or just have a chat, even the managers and partners. The Buddy system works very well with answering any immediate questions I face, but I also feel comfortable taking issues to my manager and other managers and partners if I need more in-depth knowledge.

Day-to-day responsibilities consist of mainly preparing financial statements, income tax returns, and GST returns. However, there are plenty of other administration tasks, trainings and duties that pop up requiring time and attention such as monthly fees, meetings and trainings amongst other things.

Recruitment
It was really quick and simple, communication was really good and I felt like I was kept in the loop at all times. My questions were also answered very promptly and I felt well supported throughout the entire process. Questions relating to what I had in my CV - previous work experiences, how did I find university etc. Structured in a friendly conversation manner where I felt comfortable the whole time. Just be yourself as you will fit in much better than pretending to be anyone and don’t take yourself too seriously.

Salary
The pay is relatively on the lower expectations of the industry however the work-life balance and company culture is much greater so I believe that this compensates for this.

Training
The training programs at BDO are good as a member of the tax team. We have regular tax training sessions and tax updates which helps keep us upskilled. Because my team also does BAS work this means I get to be involved with BAS trainings also which means I get exposure to both tax and BAS trainings which is good for my development.
