Pros & Cons

  • Diverse projects that make an impact on my community and the Graduate Development Programme learning sessions and connecting events.
  • The safety to learn and to learn through failing. My supportive team and their investment in my growth
  • There is quite a wide range of cultures in the team. There are lots of social club activities. Friendly environment. Encourage a healthy work-life balance. There are quite a lot of resources available to learn from if underresourced. In close proximity to upper management and leadership. A range of career pathways.
  • The people and culture it's a very friendly workplace not matter who you work with, I've only heard good things. Heaps of people that have celebrated 20, 30+ years at Beca, I think that is a really good sign that its a positive and supportive workplace.
  • The standout feature of working at Beca is the diverse range of projects and tasks that keep the job engaging and continually expand our skills. Beca encourages employees to explore different aspects of their roles, promoting personal growth. The company culture is exceptional, built on collaboration, inclusivity, and a strong sense of community. Beca offered flexible working, providing work-life balance and support for ongoing learning and development.
  • Because it is such a big company, it takes a long time to get the chance to get broad coverage of the activities that your discipline involves. This varies from team to team and from business line to business line, but I have felt my learning and development have been slow.
  • It can be stressful at times when scoped hours are too low and/or when there is a short timeframe.
  • One potential drawback of working at our company, particularly for roles outside of our graduate programmer or rotational programs, could be a comparatively less competitive salary when compared to other consulting firms.
  • The location is somewhat difficult to commute to, and as with all big companies, I would say there can be a lot more downtime for smaller companies.
  • Beca offers a strong work environment, growth opportunities, and a supportive culture, which many employees find equally rewarding.

There is a clear path for career progression in my team, and I understand clearly what skills are needed to develop to move up the ranks. There are clear position descriptions for each career level. Improving technical, business acumen, and leadership skills all contribute to career progression. People can also move between teams if they would like a career change.

The first one that comes to mind is the new volunteering leave day that we get per year. It's a day the company pays us to get out there in the community to help with volunteering activities, whether that be tree-planting, rubbish cleanups, and so on. great fun when you do it as a group!

Culture
We have a big and diverse team, and we hold many activities to gather people together and promote different cultures. We also have a lot of events for just the graduates in the office to connect with each other, which is the part I love the most.

We also actively celebrate Pride Week and various cultural weeks. The company offers paid maternity and paternity leave, demonstrating support for family needs. Additionally, we prioritize diversity in recruitment, retention, and promotion, ensuring equal opportunities for all. These initiatives contribute to a diverse and inclusive work environment.

Although busy, many of them have been absolutely amazing since they are always willing to explain things to me and provide guidance where I need it. We have regular personal development sessions with our team leaders throughout the year where we can express any concerns, ask for feedback, or do anything else on your mind, which is great for career building. My section has also been very vocal about recognizing successes. I recently became a finalist for an industry award, and this was celebrated in a section meeting.

Office Work Environment
It's a very standard office nothing too fancy, but I love how the entire office is very accessible. This makes collaboration and socializing across other business lines and sections across the company very easy and even encouraged! We have a business smart dress code, but not super formal like with blazers and ties. Fridays are casual clothes days, which always feel great if you're getting together with friends after work.

Recruitment

Recruitment
I found the hiring process very seamless and didn't take up too much of my time. It consisted of one application, a short 1-minute video, and then one interview. It is a much better experience than multiple interviews.

The salary is average. But development and opportunities are what most of the graduates are after.

Training
We primarily learn our technical skills on the job as we work under the supervision of a senior. We do have a range of other training opportunities, such as graduate conferences or lunch and learn development sessions with the entire graduate cohort, weekly online training sessions on a range of topics within my section (building services), as well as engineering equipment supplier companies coming in to give trainings.

It’s the most talked-about initiative within the business. We are taking it very seriously across all business lines and ensuring our client's needs are met with this initiative. There are also a lot of internal initiatives being taken.
