I work as a mechanical engineer in Auckland's building services section. As a part of my role, I design HVAC systems in buildings to make them comfortable to inhabit. Day-to-day tasks vary depending on what projects you are on at any given time, but they often involve correspondence with partner companies (who we are working on the same projects with), doing design using various calculation and CAD software, and conducting site visits.

I'm not entirely sure this type of work is the work I want to do for the rest of my life but I also recognise that as a graduate you don't usually get to do the fun work. Just a large change from university where you had a lot more fleixbility to research things you are interested in

I mainly write technical reports, undertake ecological and environmental site work and some work package management.

I've always liked technical jobs and I am doing exactly what I wanted to do

Project engineer now working on site a few days a week on a capital project. Carrying out engineering design, reviewing drawings, procedures, walking around plant.

Do quite a bit of support work which is boring but allows me to get involved in the details. Some technical work, and interacting with clients.

I work on internal enterprise projects supporting change management and business analysis work such as requirements gathering, process mapping, stakeholder engagement, adoption strategies, etc.

Range of technical and project management across the food and beverage and water industries

Depends on the work you're involved in. If you get on interesting projects you'll be heavily involved in the design, modelling, carbon assessments, client relationships report writing, and health and safety analysis. However, if you're under-resourced you can be stuck doing mundane tasks like meeting minutes for everyone or filling out Excel spreadsheets.

I think that the scale of Beca provides a wide range of job opportunities which enable an individual to develop diverse skills.

I have played multiple roles whilst working, either as an assistant, project management, supportive person and/or design lead discipline.

I do the engineering for small work packages on my project.

Varies between office work and site work, site work can span hours to days at a time (I enjoy site work, where others may not). Office work includes report writing, analyses (Liquefaction, slope stability etc), foundation design etc

- Ideal split of site experience and design work with project understanding and construction knowledge development. Generally able to satisfy any work curiosities with the range of active projects.

I don't have time to cover everything but to summarise: - CAD design 2D and 3D of civil features for a variety of projects. Mostly Stormwater at this stage. - Flood Modelling - Calculating a lot of things - Report writing in conjunction with design - Interdisciplinary reviews to ensure all on the same page - Meeting with clients occasionally - Site Visits when necessary - Learning programs in any spare time for relevant software or company processes
