Recruitment Process

The Buddle Findlay summer clerk programme provides you with the opportunity to get to know them, understand what they do, and discover how they grow and work.  Their summer clerk programme is designed for law students in their penultimate year looking to gain real-life experience over the university summer break.  As a summer clerk you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in their many practice areas, learn alongside experts in their field and get involved in client-facing work from the get-go.  With a culture of mentoring and support, you will be given all the tools you need to grow and succeed!

Applications for their 2023/2024 summer clerk programme open 9 March and close 27 March 2023.   Their 2022/2023 summer clerk programme applications are closed for this year.  When you are ready to apply, you will be asked to complete a quiz to provide an insight into how you think, feel and operate.  They believe grades don't define you and this process gives them a deeper understanding into who you are and how you could contribute to the success of their firm.

Visit their careers site to view some diagrams which show the summer clerk programme and summer clerk recruitment process.

Remuneration & Career Growth

Their promise is to provide you with a collaborative and supportive environment that will develop and enrich you.  As a summer clerk you will rotate through two teams to develop a broad understanding of corporate law and take part in our summer clerk training academy to ensure a smooth transition into the corporate world.  Your growth, development and support will be of upmost importance to your supervisor (who will be a partner or a senior member of their team) and your dedicated buddy.

They are committed to supporting your success in all areas of life and offer a range of development, wellbeing, and community initiatives, enabling you to be the best you can be.

What Graduates Say About Them
  • The range and challenge of work. I get to work on something different every day, and feel as if the work I do can actually help people and change things for the better.
  • The sheer amount of opportunities provided - not only in terms of multiple weekly legal training, but diversity and inclusion and social committees as well as external training e.g. resilience training. 2. He aha te mea nui o te ao (What is the most important thing in the world?) He tangata, he tangata, he tangata (It is the people, it is the people, it is the people). The people make up the culture at Buddle Findlay and everyone is willing to help you along your journey.
  • Great community/network of people that are kind, caring, professional and knowledgeable.
  • The firm has a great culture with kind and supportive people. We have a buddy system for summer clerks and law clerks which is very helpful and fosters a very nurturing work environment due to the availability of the buddy to answer questions and help you learn the ropes. We also get to rotate through teams as summer clerks and law clerks which enables you to get a taste of what different practice areas do and helps you to work out what type of law you are interested in and what team you want to end up in. We have heaps of great social events, great development opportunities and the technology of the firm is exceptional.
  • Doing challenging, interesting work in a team of high performers can be stressful, and it is easy for imposter syndrome to kick in. This job can be demanding.
  • Given it is a big law firm, sometimes it takes time to get to know everyone, especially if you are on different floors.
  • While pay is market rate for law graduates, my knowledge of what other people my age are getting paid in similar (non-law) graduate roles does make it feel as though law graduates start off with relatively low salaries, however I understand that this will climb quickly.
