Whilst everyday presents its challenges, I genuinely feel as though I am learning each day

What's your job about?

I work at a commercial law firm in Christchurch, and assist in providing a broad range of legal services to clients across a range of legal areas.  My day to day is made up of a range of different tasks, including drafting legal documents, conducting research and providing advice.  This work spans a variety of legal areas, including banking and financial services, property and corporate.  Working across these areas has significantly broadened my legal knowledge whilst also ensuring the work continues to engage and challenge me.  I enjoy a good level of responsibility and am regularly given files to manage, whilst still feeling as though I have the necessary support around me to ask any questions I may have.  Having a supportive team around me has certainly made the jump from Uni to work much more manageable.

What's your background?

I was originally born in the UK but grew up in Christchurch and completed my schooling here, before beginning my LLB and BCom at the University of Canterbury.  Besides my studies, I was actively involved in a range of sporting codes (including rugby, touch and skiing) both as a player and coach.  In the Uni holidays I worked on a sheep and deer farm, a role that offered a good change of scenery.  I also enjoyed volunteering as a caseworker for Canterbury Community Law – an experience which provided a good grounding in the practicalities of working in a law firm.  After initially applying for a role as a summer clerk, I was offered a full time position as a law clerk and began in November 2021.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

Since joining I have been afforded the opportunity to work across a range of legal areas, working closely alongside experienced lawyers (including partners) who are always willing to share their insights.  Working across such dynamic areas of law (particularly in the financial services regulatory space) where the legal landscape is constantly shifting means I am constantly challenged.

Whilst everyday presents its challenges, I genuinely feel as though I am learning each day.  It is also hugely rewarding when you provide sound advice to a client or find a crucial piece of research.

What are the limitations/challenges of your job?

Typically my hours are from 8:30am to 5pm each day, however on occasion I am required to work beyond this.  This can sometimes present challenges, particularly if it clashes with any commitments I may have outside of work (e.g. sport).  However, this is relatively rare and I have not yet been required to work in the weekends (unlike others I know from competing law firms).

Three pieces of advice for your university-self?

  1. Be sure to enjoy and make the most of your Uni experience.  Make an effort to attend lectures and events – immersing yourself in campus life will mean you get more out of it in the long run.
  2. Don’t be afraid to ask for help – whether that’s asking your lecturer questions in the lead up to an exam, or reaching out to your support network to work through a personal issue – be sure to utilise the resources around you and get comfortable asking questions or seeking advice.
  3. Utilise the free time that Uni provides to pursue other interests and hobbies.  This will mean you come out a more rounded individual – something that will hold you in good stead going forward.
