Department of Corrections NZ

Department of Corrections NZ Graduate Programs & Internships

  • Government & Public Service

Overview:

The Department of Corrections works to make New Zealand a better, safer place by:

  • Protecting the public from those who can cause harm
  • Reducing re-offending.

Each week we manage around 10,000 people in prisons and 30,000 offenders in our communities. Our 10,000 staff are committed to supporting offenders to help them address their offending and gain skills that will help them lead a crime-free life.

Corrections protect the public of New Zealand from those who can harm them, by:

  • Making sure prisoners, parolees, and other offenders in the community comply with the sentences and orders imposed by the Courts and Parole Board
  • Providing offenders with rehabilitation programs, education, and job training that will turn their lives around and break the cycle of re-offending.

The Department of Corrections NZ Story

Corrections was formed in 1995 on the principles of rehabilitation and public safety – which remain at the core of what we do.

The formation of Corrections has developed alongside beliefs and trends that have influenced crime and punishment in New Zealand since early colonial times. Read about the history of prisons and corrections services in New Zealand on Te Ara, The Encyclopedia of New Zealand.

Today we employ 10,000 people located in over 151 sites and 18 prisons across the country.

At any given time, 8,500 individuals are in prison, and 31,000 offenders are serving a community-based sentence or order.
