Pros & Cons

  • The opportunities to learn are endless
  • Good working environment, given the opportunity and resources to upskill
  • Flexibility of working location, support in learning new skills and upskilling
  • Receiving different tasks so that I learn different skills, the fact that every day I'm always learning and improving my knowledge of GIS and becoming better.
  • Sometimes there are short timelines to finish work
  • Paid lower in comparison to similar roles in the industry
  • Workload can ramp up at times to very high levels compared to any other role I've had. Not necessarily a minus except when spread too thin on tasks

Career Prospects
Within the Graduate programme, there is a chance for the graduates to rotate between different teams and experience what it feels like to work in the different sections. Other than that, from witnessing first hand, some of the older graduates/interns ended up working and taking up junior roles within the organisation.

Culture
In comparison work with local councils, the culture in office has been ranked one of the best I've experienced! I've been very lucky as this is my first job after I've graduated and I appreciate how everyone in the company is supportive. Eagle tend to have a flat structure and hierarchy within a team with one leader in it. Other than that, everyone have their specialized skill within a team and everyone work alongside together to get a project done.

I think our company is very diverse and that this is not a problem in the office.

Satisfaction
Everyday is not the same, some days are spent on self-development, others are spent creating a demo for colleague/customer. You also have the opportunity to work on projects as well, although these sometimes get put on hold if other things come up.

Managers have been great, have been approachable when I've had questions, and have been clear on what to work on and where I can improve.

Really nice location/office that has an outdoor deck for barbeques, nice kitchen. Dress code is extremely flexible, you can wear whatever you want within reason at the office, as long as you do look professional at appropriate settings like meetings with clients, conferences, etc.

Interview questions were standard, but also very friendly and based a lot of personality type, not just achievements which I greatly appreciated. Prepare by knowing about GIS, but also express what makes you personable and easy to work with. Knowledge can be taught, but Eagle looks for people that can be trained and are lovely to work with.

In all honesty, the pay threshold is incredibly good for a graduate! The average income is on the higher end of what a graduate of all industries would receive. Whilst there are no big bonuses, there are a couple of benefits such as a flu shot getting paid for by the company.

Training
When I joined Eagle, I participated in a 6-week training course (GALoP-X) which gave a great overview of many of the applications within the ArcGIS system. Since then I have been given time to work on Esri Training courses to upskill in the background when there isn't higher priority work.

I feel like I have the best possible working flexibility at this point without switching to part-time work or the normalisation of a 4 day work week.

I would give credit to reducing the amount of plastic used in the workplace, as well as providing organics/recycling options in our kitchen. Furthermore, we do have dishwasher in order for us to clean and reuse the utensils providing in the office. Even during office lunch events would involve the minimal use of plastic and recycling things. Besides that, most people commute to work by carpooling, busing or train to the office. On the other hand, some people opt in to work from home.
