Inland Revenue logo

Inland Revenue plays a critical role in improving the economic and social well-being of New Zealanders. We collect 80% of the Crown's revenue as well as collecting and disburse social support programme payments and provide the government with policy advice.

We are working to make sure:

  • Inland Revenue is responsive in meeting the changing and increasing expectations of government and society
  • we make it easy for customers to get it right and hard to get it wrong
  • society has confidence that appropriate action will be taken against customers who do not comply
  • increasingly, paying taxes is seen as contributing to society
  • we are professional, approachable, effective and efficient.

Recruitment Process

As part of our application process we request applicants to upload:

  • their CV
  • their Cover letter

For our Graduate policy Role, we request a short sample of candidates' work that demonstrates their writing ability (e.g. an excerpt of an essay written for a university course) along with a complete academic transcript or a copy of an unofficial transcript if they have not yet graduated

Once you've applied for a role and have been notified that you're a shortlisted candidate we'll then invite you for an interview with the Hiring Manager.

All Inland Revenue's offers of employment depend on:

  • a satisfactory criminal record and tax/child support compliance check
  • a signed declaration of fidelity and secrecy acceptance of the Inland Revenue Code of Conduct the outcome of any review of non-appointment

Remuneration & Career Growth

Additional Compensation Benefits

Our Hauora Hub offers information and guidance to our people on all things health and wellbeing related. In addition to regularly updated events, podcasts, social challenges, helplines and support services, our Hauora Hub also offers a range of discounted health and wellbeing to our IR staff, including health insurance, gym memberships, and eye care, food and nutrition services and more.

Career Opportunities

Our performance approach, Whanake (meaning to grow and develop), gives our people a framework to support constructive kōrero with their leaders and key stakeholders.

At IR we role model a networked approach to working, meaning that you’ll have the opportunity to engage with (and learn from!) key stakeholders and subject matter experts from across the business. We pride ourselves on providing opportunities to learn and develop to all of our people. We are a capability-based organisation, which means that we assess our people for suitability based on how they demonstrate the capabilities that are required for their role – or the role that they are interested in moving to. We don’t look at things like tenure or years of experience! This means that our people can have control over their capability development and drive their progression opportunities in a supportive and encouraging environment.

To further support this, we have designed our 12 People Capabilities and a series of ‘IR Role Families’ which group together roles with similar capability requirements and outcomes. The purpose of this is to help you:

  • understand the capabilities required in your role and what they look like in practice
  • think about potential capability development opportunities and;
  • support you to explore areas of interest and potential career pathways for you across our wider business

These tools mean that you have a way to understand what is expected of you, choose and focus on development activities that will provide you with the most value and achieve your career goals in a way that is tailored and specific to you.

What Graduates Say About Them
  • Diverse and Inclusive workplace- Everyone is happy to help each other. Respect is noticeable in the workplace.
  • I love the work culture and how welcoming everyone has been since I joined. It is great having flexible working hours and a Team Lead that is so supportive and helps develop my skills.
  • Freedom to work on tasks that you are interested in and a positive information-sharing environment.
  • I am provided with a significant amount of opportunities that have allowed me to gain invaluable experience, be involved in every stage of the policy process, and accelerate my professional development.
  • Flexible work schedule for the most part. Generous annual and sick leave. Lots of opportunities for development (courses eg) to continue learning. You get to be in the thick of policymaking very soon after you join.
  • There isn't anything that I would say is the worst part about working for my company.
  • Sometimes internal processes take a while and information requests do as well.
  • Potentially the inability to work from overseas and difficultly to work remotely (although there is flexibility to work short stints remotely).
  • There is nothing that stands out to me as being negative.
  • Sometimes things can change quickly in the policy space, and sometimes your work can shift quickly, which can be quite stressful.

The coolest thing has probably been learning more about IT systems. Because this wasn’t my background, I’ve done a lot of listening to learn, and it’s been great to get more insight into the systems that drive business today.

I am involved in both internal & external projects; this has helped me learn more about IR. Last but not the least, we have a great team culture. We share our learnings, work collaboratively & support each other.

Once a week, I have an informal coffee catch-up, in the kitchen, with the other grad in my cohort where we’re able to share helpful tips we have picked up on our jobs and chat about how each of us is going. It’s really nice knowing there are other people in the same situation learning similar things to you.

One of my responsibilities is to look after our contract recruitment. I liaise with managers to discuss contract extensions and prepare the paperwork.
