Pros & Cons

  • Diverse and Inclusive workplace- Everyone is happy to help each other. Respect is noticeable in the workplace.
  • I love the work culture and how welcoming everyone has been since I joined. It is great having flexible working hours and a Team Lead that is so supportive and helps develop my skills.
  • Freedom to work on tasks that you are interested in and a positive information-sharing environment.
  • I am provided with a significant amount of opportunities that have allowed me to gain invaluable experience, be involved in every stage of the policy process, and accelerate my professional development.
  • Flexible work schedule for the most part. Generous annual and sick leave. Lots of opportunities for development (courses eg) to continue learning. You get to be in the thick of policymaking very soon after you join.
  • There isn't anything that I would say is the worst part about working for my company.
  • Sometimes internal processes take a while and information requests do as well.
  • Potentially the inability to work from overseas and difficultly to work remotely (although there is flexibility to work short stints remotely).
  • There is nothing that stands out to me as being negative.
  • Sometimes things can change quickly in the policy space, and sometimes your work can shift quickly, which can be quite stressful.

You are encouraged to create a development plan which in my experience is largely self-led, but my manager is really receptive to any requests I have. For example, you identify areas you want to progress on, and there are resources to help you, or courses you can go on. Alternatively, your manager can (without bounds) shift your work into that area or suggest how you can develop certain skills.

Corporate Social Responsibility
Socially, IR commits well to engaging with communities and stakeholders. Environmentally, there has been an effort to reduce emissions. As a personal project, I am part of the waste minimalization group, which has been acting as a feedback loop between each floors waste, the systems we have, and people's behaviour/perceptions.

Culture
The workplace is a very social environment. Everyone is incredibly welcoming and friendly, and most importantly, everyone, including leaders are very accessible. Everyone will give you time and help if you need it. Office hours are flexible, and Working from Home is allowed, meaning you have the flexibility needed to easily go to things like appointments, etc.

Office Work Environment
We recently moved to a new office and it is a really nice, open space to work in. There are lots of kitchen facilities, open spaces, collaboration spaces, etc. The dress code is smart casual, but formal if you are attending external stakeholder meetings, especially with newer stakeholders.

The interview process was an enjoyable experience. A small panel of team leaders who were very friendly and would support any unsettled candidates.

I am satisfied. I believe that we are paid competitively, when compared to other agencies. Opportunities for progression also result in the ability to increase pay.

Training

Training
Training is excellent. We are given mentors from multiple different stages in their careers meaning we have differing levels of experience to lean on when needed. We are entered into many courses which help to give a strong overview of the tax system. We also have the opportunity to register for courses if we believe that they will help our development. All forms of learning and development, whether that be social, formal, oral, written, etc. are given significant importance at IR. Not just for graduates but for advisors of all levels.

Work Hours
There is a lot of flexibility on when you start the day as long as you get your overall hours in or ensure you attend meetings (if they start early or later in the day). There is also flexibility to go to personal appointments, but again this requires you to be honest about the hours you do.
