Pros & Cons

  • The best thing about Jarden is how supported the company has made me feel in both an educational and personal sense. We have received unfettered access to any learning facilities that we need and have been provided with world-class training programs to provide us with the tools to successfully begin our careers. Additionally, the team has always ensured that our personal development is the highest priority and provided us with the autonomy to think for ourselves. Moreover, the team ensures that we are personally tracking towards our goals and managing the stressors that come with a new career appropriately.
  • Fantastic training is provided, and I learn so much on the job. The company culture is also great.
  • Great colleagues, and a supportive working environment that is conducive to learning.
  • Being amongst a team of incredibly hardworking, motivated, and talented individuals who are also very personable is one of my favorite aspects of my job. Whether it be working alongside them or general daily conversations amongst people in other teams, it really makes you appreciate the day-to-day aspect of work. In addition, closely collaborating with senior executives across a diverse spectrum of companies represents an extraordinary opportunity as a junior being a truly distinctive aspect of this role.
  • Quality of the people, the engagement of junior staff across the floor (including across teams), the quality of the training (and the ability to do it overseas in NZ), and the quality of the projects we get to advise on.
  • Jarden has made the transition for the start of my career feel very smooth and I have nothing to comment on this question.
  • Nothing immediately comes to mind. I work in an environment with people who not only value the work I produce but also are there to teach and support me on a day-to-day basis.
  • Perhaps hours - but comes with the job.
  • The usual drawbacks of banking, however it is likely much better at Jarden than elsewhere.
  • The worst thing is sometimes losing control of your schedule because, in a fast-paced environment, new things pop up all the time.

Progression opportunities are strong once you start to perform at a level required for promotion. The job evolves as you move through the ranks so that means you can easily stay in one career for an extended period and always be learning new things.

Corporate Social Responsibility
Have not yet worked on any of these but we have a strong business around carbon trading and offset mechanisms which clearly shows our commitment to ESG. The health of employees is also strongly considered suggesting further commitment to CSR.

Culture
The structure and hierarchy work really efficiently at Jarden. There are two things to comment on - in terms of contributing to ideas/approachability, the structure is really flat, and all opinions are valued. By the same token, as a junior who is inexperienced, you always have the seniors to ask for help or explain a concept or idea you don't understand. Work that you complete also goes up through the chain before it is delivered to clients as a quality control measure. Socializing amongst colleagues is a great strength of our floor. We regularly participate in social events such as the JPM corporate challenge, and a weekly touch football team, and there are always people around to eat dinner with or go for casual drinks on a Friday evening.

Diversity

Diversity
Commitment is clearly strong - we have a market-leading proportion of women in leadership positions within our bank, and there is certainly flexibility for parents to manage their young families around work.

In my role as an analyst within Jarden's Investment Banking division, I experience a dynamic and rapid-paced work environment. The nature of my day-to-day activities varies depending on ongoing projects, client requirements, and market dynamics. Broadly speaking, my responsibilities revolve around executing deals, conducting marketing efforts, and performing valuations. On certain days, I am engaged in preparing Board presentations, while on others, I attend client meetings or focus on constructing models that aid in their assessment of specific opportunities. These tasks necessitate a diverse range of research, technical expertise, and critical thinking abilities, ensuring that the work remains consistently captivating.

My manager really supports me and my career progression and actively makes an effort to make sure I have great opportunities in which to excel. I receive regular feedback and recognition for my performance, and he advocates for me to higher-ups and is a great mentor.

Office Work Environment
Hard to think of a better office view anywhere in the world - in the middle of the city, overlooking the coast and harbour. The open floor plan is great because it means the most senior person and the CEOs work in the same environment, and you can learn just though observing how the best in the business operate. Facilities are great, there is a well-stocked kitchen (could be some more healthy snacks), shower/changerooms with towels provided downstairs and public transport/cabs never far away. Dress code is as expected. Monday to Thursday it is a suit, no ties really worn on the floor unless you are going to a client meeting. Casual Fridays people where anything from smart casual to pretty casual.

The interview process was streamlined and didn't drag out, and as soon as I received my offer the team all congratulated me and took us out for drinks. Was a great experience.

Training
The training is fantastic. After two weeks of technical and cultural training at the commencement of the year in Sydney, we got to travel to our Auckland office in June/July for 2 weeks of technical training. After already having some experience on the job, the further mid- year technical training was really valuable. The Auckland trip was also great as we really got to unplug from our home office and get to bond as a grad cohort. There is also very regular "teach- in" sessions hosted by our colleagues throughout the year. I have been able to pick-up skills through these formal training sessions, as well as on the job.

Work Hours
Hours are generally okay because the only instances where you work very late are when there is something important that is due the next day - this tends to be the more exciting work, so the late work does not feel like a burden. The floor is very good at ensuring you get out of the office as soon as you can when work is done, which reduces the perception of a Facetime requirement. Would also say the need to work late is very much determined by whether it is a live client engagement or some idea generation.

We have green bins and participate in the 'cercle' coffee cup program to stop paper cups. Additional to this is the carbon offset trading business I mentioned before.
