Pros & Cons

  • Getting to work with like-minded and similar-aged people I got to experience high-level discussions and decision-making in some of New Zealand's largest companies in my first year of work.
  • Lots of opportunities to learn, many coaches and mentors willing to help, WFH/flexible working, I feel people have a healthy expectation of my capabilities and experience and work around that rather than I work around people's expectations of myself, a good introduction to a corporate career.
  • Great client portfolio. Working with a broad range of people, i.e., age groups. Starting with the other graduates makes the transition into corporate life easier. I can see the benefits of this work experience.
  • The coaching we receive is very insightful, and everyone around us is always willing to help.
  • The best thing about working at KPMG is the bonus of working in a big corporation, given the environment, knowledge, and learning you get from it.
  • Pays the least out of the Big 4.
  • Long hours.
  • Unpaid overtime.
  • Sometimes the work can be a bit mundane.
  • 1st year salary not competitive with industry (e.g. Banks, NZX50) -Difficult to move around to experience different projects when you have a specialised undergrad.

I feel that the promotion possibilities are very good within this firm, as there is always a constant promotion each year with the opportunity to get a double promotion with a good year-end rating.

Each year, we have a volunteer day where each employee must volunteer a day of their life to help the community. KPMG is also the sponsor of a few low-decile schools around the Auckland region.

A bunch of friendly young coworkers who are always understanding and willing to help out Plenty of social events and always fun to hang out both in and out of work hours.

Diversity
It seems to be very inclusive and diversity-positive; not much in the day-to-day you see or hear, mostly mostly online, so I have no real interaction around this, but I 100% support it all.

I think we get good exposure early on in the corporate finance team to a variety of work, which I enjoy.

While we don't have the fanciest building in town, we are located on the Viaduct, so it has beautiful views and makes a great walk to work. We use hot desks and do not have assigned spaces, as we often work from home or client sites. We have a cafe, bike rack, showers, etc. in the building and are near a number of lunch spots. Our dress code is business casual, so it is pretty rare to see anyone wearing a tie, but for the most part, it includes a collared shirt and trousers.

Recruitment
After the application and abstract thinking tests, I was invited to attend a workshop where we would work through some accounting analysis and problem-solving assignments with other applicants. As this was during COVID, it was all online and observed through a video call. After the assignment, there was a one-on-one interview with a number of company employees.

KPMG is different from the other big four as the biannual salary increases for all levels of staff. Therefore, other graduates at the other big four receive bumps twice a year, while we get one in April. I think that the biannual pay bumps reflect the expanding knowledge base and output of KPMG, as we are offering a much different skill set than when we first started.

Training
My team recently started an IGA-specific fortnightly training program, which I have found extremely useful. It has taught me about all the areas that comprise the job I do. Because I sit with others in my team, I also receive a lot of on-the-job training.

Very flexible. If you are getting the work done and meeting your required hours, they are more than happy with your flexibility with the hours you work.

KPMG is currently one of the large corporations that is on a large push to achieve a carbon-zero footprint by late 2020's and is consistently encouraging employees to engage in meetings online and purchase carbon credits.
