Shannon Jerkovich

We have customers who have multi-million dollar contracts with us which I get to manage and process which feels rewarding and as though my role has a part to play in the good our software is creating for people globally.

What's your job about?

Orion Health is a software development company specialising in the research and development of healthcare software. I work in our Operations Team, looking after a range of internal processes.

In Business Operations my day usually looks like responding to emails from project managers, sales reps and the finance department. My duties include maintaining our internal ERP system to aid numerous processes such as customer invoicing, vendor purchases, tracking project progress, contract set-ups and general information management.

What's your background?

I grew up in Te Aroha - a teeny tiny farming town in Waikato. Although quite central, our biggest shop would be a pretty average-sized Countdown. I would say my most impactful stage of life has been between the years 15 and to the present. I have learnt a lot of skills academically and personally that have helped me grow and develop some of the habits I have now. Education and practising self-discipline have been a big part of my life during these years. Coming from a very modest background with a single parent has been a big driver of my motivation for going to uni and expanding my opportunities so I can set myself up for a comfortable and successful (hopefully) adulthood. Before I landed this role I actually started off at Orion Health as an HR Intern over the summer of 21/22. This turned into a part-time position while I completed my studies in 2022 which I was then offered a grad position once I finished. All up at Orion Health for 1 yr and 3 months but in this role for 4 months.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes, I believe this job requires a large range of transferable skills that many other jobs and even skills from studying at uni can provide. I do think one must be able to work to timelines and be quite diligent due to our involvement in the financial side of things where we must uphold accuracy, particularly when preparing invoices. During the end of month financial duties, things can be a bit stressful so working well under pressure is also a must!

What's the coolest thing about your job?

What I enjoy most about my job is seeing the tangible flow down of how our internal processes play a part in providing patient care and improving the quality of people's lives as a result. We have customers who have multi-million dollar contracts with us which I get to manage and process which feels rewarding and as though my role has a part to play in the good our software is creating for people globally.

What are the limitations of your job?

I would say the biggest limitation of my job is that it can often feel endless -  there is always something I could be processing, responding to, updating or improving. This can sometimes feel as though I am chasing my own tail which can be unsatisfying at times and also, makes it difficult to determine what to prioritise.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Possibly to keep on track with the small habits I’m trying to build because one day, they will eventually stick. These are important for success in many areas of your life.
  • Give absolutely everything that twinges your gut when you consider flaking or backing out a go as it is often these situations that open yourself to new opportunities - particularly applying for the HR internship at Orion which I didn’t fulfil much of the criteria for and now look where I’ve ended up!
  • Lastly, try and enjoy your time being this age, it only happens once and before you know it you’re working Mon-Fri and getting excited about Onecard specials.
