Pros & Cons

  • Everyone is very friendly and supportive. Great team and team leader. Very interesting and varied work.
  • There is no competition within the company, everyone tries to lift each other and provide help whenever possible.
  • Culture of the workplace, and the opportunity to work on a range of projects with many different people.
  • The support from my colleagues. The opportunity to get involved in interesting projects. The work-life balance.
  • The flexibility of working times and locations, and the people. I enjoy the freedom of choosing when I can work from home and the hours I do. It helps me balance my personal life and work schedule.
  • Lack of intermediate staff who you can go ask for help without worrying about how busy they are.
  • Everyone is very busy, it can be difficult to find time for non-project related work such as training, career development, discussions etc.
  • The variable workload
  • High stress when projects are due
  • Sometimes, project commitments conflicts and all of a sudden there is a big workload. I also get stressed when some projects have a tight deadline and budget and I have to really push myself to try to deliver within budget.

Diversity
They are quite commited to diversity. Its good to work in a workplace where you see women in upper management being a women myself. T+T top up PCL for permanent employees to full base salary for the 26 weeks for mothers. Mothers are further entitled to take more days of leave (unpaid) including the PCL leave up to 52 weeks. So effectively you can get a year's maternity leave. The flexible working hour policy also works with taking care of children, I know lots of parents in the company who do part time, and flexible hours so they can pick their kids up from school, etc.,

I am in a project office as a geotechnical engineer for residential development. I prepare and conduct weekly site investigation work. I analyse investigation data, calculate geotechnical parameters, and prepare geotechnical reports for building consent.

So far, the project managers I worked with have been a delight to work with. They are prompt and detailed with the work instructions, accessible when I run into issues on site. Performance feedback is encouraged and I have received recognition for commendable work that I have done. They are also easy to talk to and I can easily ask for advice which I found immensely helpful.

Office Work Environment
The location of the main office is superb, with excellent facilities and space. However, a better collaboration space would be nice, currently the main meeting space for large audiences is a bit awkward. The dress code is smart casual, which makes it very easy to dress for work and not stressful.

Recruitment
Attended an assessment day where we learnt about the company, met the other applicants and had our interview. The process was excellent and well organised, which made me accept this offer over competition. The offer was made quickly as well. We had a problem presented to us prior to the interview which we were to give a short response on, so we discussed my answers to that. This mostly focused on my presentation of the answers and not the answers. I was asked if I liked report writing, and about my experience from my summer job. Then we discussed hobbies and interests. Be sincere and confident, with an open mind to learn as much as you can.

Pay at Tonkin Taylor is really good compared to other companies. They even gave us graduates a bonus to help us kick start our career because as everyone knows, students are broke. Great social events, travel insurance, $500 wellbeing allowance, team lunches, and generous free food during meetings and gatherings.

Lots of time devoted to L+D and lots of opportunities for growth and development. Have learnt a great deal of technical knowledge in my time here!

Work Hours
I love how flexible my hours can be and how I can shape my working hours based on my personal schedule (as long as I do my contracted hours). For example, I hate cycling and commuting in the rain so if it rains heavily, I am able to work from home and carry out my tasks (if I have no responsibilities on-site). In addition, if I have to pick up my younger brother from school, I am able to do so if I work from home as my parents do not have the same flexibility.
