1 Queen St update

As announced earlier this year our Auckland office will be moving to new premises at 1 Queen Street, with the move anticipated for January 2024. Our new location will help us all experience better collaboration opportunities, experience working right on Auckland’s waterfront, and create an even better client experience.

Today we chat to Kathy Ngatai, Deloitte’s Commercial Director, about the current state of construction and the new features that will be in the building.

What’s the latest construction update for the new building?

Our fit-out programme is still on track for a move-in date of January 2024, despite delays in the construction of the building due to COVID-19. By April next year the Deloitte signage will be in place on the north and south faces of the new build. It will be exciting for people to see where we’re going to be taking up residence.

Will the new building offer any different ways of working compared to what we currently have at 80 Queen St?

On level 17 of the new building there’ll be a large café/hub to help bring our people together in a social setting with the other floors having smaller kitchenettes. We’ve selected the hub to be on level 17 because it’s just two floors up and two floors down on either side from the work floors, so it remains equally accessible for everyone. There’ll also be an internal staircase on all floors and people will be able to use this to connect with each other or to reach the hub. Level 17 will also have an extensive collaboration area, but collaborative spaces will be available on all the work floors so we can better connect with one another across the business.

Another exciting new feature is going to be jump rooms. These will be rooms people can book as a dedicated quiet workspace which will enable better focus. The way we work will change as well, as along with jump rooms, desks will be booked through an online booking system (or via an app on your phone or at the desk-top). By booking desks you’ll be able to work closely with the business unit that you need to, but you can also work from anywhere in the building. The jump rooms will be in place of partner offices so that flexibility is available for everyone.

The following is how we expect the floors to be split:

  • Level 15 – Consulting
  • Level 16 – A&A and RAS
  • Level 17 – Enabling Areas, café hub and greenhouse
  • Level 18 and 19 – Tax and Business Advisory, FAS and Enabling Areas
  • Level 20 – Reception and client meeting rooms

This floor plans give a good indication of what a general floor will look like once complete.

Level 16

What’s an interesting/some interesting new feature of the building? What design thoughts have gone into the building to make it different from a normal build?

Currently at 80 Queen Street the ceiling height is 2.9m, in the new building this will be about 2.6m because it is an older style building, albeit completely gutted and renovated. To enable a sense of space to be created, the ceilings on the northern end of the building (facing the ferry terminal), will all be exposed so the original features and services can be seen, except for level 20, which will have its own special ceiling treatment.

On level 21 there will be a public rooftop bar. While this won’t be part of Deloitte it will allow us another space to go and socialise and is another place we can take clients. All access to the bar will be via a separate lift.

There will be a media wall in the reception area to showcase our work and people, giving our guests an immediate sense of who we are and what we do. Additionally, a barista coffee service will be available for all our guests.

We’ve engaged with local iwi Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei to provide us with designs for some of the cultural elements our architects have created and woven into the fit-out, as we wanted to ensure we honour the iwi of Tāmaki Makaurau and their mana whenua.

Any photos?

These photos show the current stage of the build as well as the amazing view. As you can see it’s very much still in the build phase.

Keep an eye out for future updates and be sure to have a look at the outside of the building – the best vantage point is from the ferry building.
