Relationships are at the heart of what we do. We are looking to give scholarships to two University of Canterbury law students who value a firm that offers down to earth and practical advice.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has one or two years left of studying law at University of Canterbury.
  • Loves the Canterbury region and the contribution it makes to our economy as much as we do.
  • Can demonstrate a wider contribution than just academic results.
  • Sees their future in a big firm with a difference.

To apply you need to be in your third or fourth year of study (with one or two years to complete your degree). We want you to love the Canterbury region and the contribution it makes to our economy as much as we do. We are looking for University of Canterbury students that can demonstrate a wider contribution than just academic results – so if you are an organiser, campaigner, entrepreneur, high performing competitor, speaker or all of these things – this could be for you. Do you see your future in a big firm with a difference?

As the recipient of a Duncan Cotterill law scholarship, you will receive:

  • $3,000 per year towards your study while you complete your law degree.
  • Summer and winter clerking opportunities at our Christchurch office while you’re studying – starting November 2024.
  • Dedicated partner and peer support.
  • Invitations to our social and education programmes throughout the year.

We know training is important – so we provide in-house, external and on the job opportunities. Our graduates and solicitors have comprehensive training programmes, tailored to their needs. Our practice groups hold forums to discuss legal issues with lawyers at all levels. And we provide a tailored development programme for our senior lawyers. Plus, we have regular lunch and learn educational sessions from our experienced lawyers.

We offer beyond the expected, including:

  • Involvement in client work from day one.
  • Exposure to a wide variety of work.
  • Comprehensive internal and external training.
  • A great social programme.

But it’s not all work. Our employees get involved in a full range of social events – from touch rugby to yoga, book groups to tennis. We encourage community work – you will find us providing pro bono support and being involved in a variety of community events.

For 166 years we have been mentoring aspiring lawyers and helping them step up into practice. Let us help you on your journey – and join our success.
