Appreciation and gratitude go a long way in making one feel like a valuable member of the team.

7.00 AM

Wake up, get ready to leave, and have a quick bite to eat.

8.30 AM

Reach the Auckland office, which is already bustling by this time. I’m a part of the production team, which is a part of the wider hardware team. Production, along with other teams within hardware – electronics, mechanical, and testing & validation, sit in close proximity to facilitate easy collaboration.

Every Monday we have a company-wide meeting at 9 am so that the exec team can share company context with all the teams, share goals and updates. New starters are also given a chance to introduce themselves to everyone in the company.

After the company meeting, the hardware team have a stand-up, which starts with each of us standing in a circle and sharing our weekend highlight and gratitude for the previous week. This is my favourite part of our Monday mornings, as it’s great to hear how everyone spent their weekend and gives us a chance to show our thanks to the teams and people who helped us out with important threads in the previous week. Appreciation and gratitude go a long way in making one feel like a valuable member of the team.

I then have a look at my calendar, to have an idea of what meetings I have planned for the rest of the day, and the week.

A major project I was working on during my summer internship was calculating and forecasting the cost of the collar over the 4 quarters of the year. This involved going through inventory and pricing and making estimates for future price.

Time for a quick fruit break. Sometimes when I don’t have time to have breakfast, it’s good to know that I can rely on having a good brekkie at work – with fruits, Up & Go, cereal, milk, protein bars, and more!

After finishing up on the task that I started with in the morning, it’s now time for lunch! Usually, we grab our lunches from the fridge, or grab something from around Auckland CBD, come upstairs to the kitchen, and eat together. It’s a great way to socialise with people outside my team and the occasional office board games make for an even more fun time.

Another part of my role as a production engineering intern is to document assembly steps for our collars. This means creating steps and instructions for our factories to follow to make sure the collar is assembled and tested correctly. I had a meeting with the mechanical team, to go over the updates that needed to be made to a previously released version of the document.

2.00 PM

Carrying out a test run on the laser cutter, before cutting up some components that would be used in the collar prototype. I then went ahead and assembled the prototype and documented all the steps.

Another quick snack run, but not as healthy as the first one. Felt like getting my savoury fix in the form of some chippies. Stevie (one of our electronics engineers’ pet) always tries her best with the puppy eyes when she sees you eating.

Having a review of the changes I made to the document with the production engineer and the electrical engineer. Once it’s been reviewed, I release the new version with the factory.

Taking a moment to appreciate the wall of cows painted by the hardware team during a team bonding paint & wine session.
