My favourite thing about the job is the responsibility you get given. Even when you have only been there for a week, you are joining meetings and are considered a critical part of the team.

What's your job about?

I would describe my responsibility within the firm as twofold. The first responsibility is to ensure that the work behind a deal, pitch, or whatever it is that you are working on is completed, and completed to a high standard. This may involve completing the analysis, sending emails to clients, organising meetings, etc.

The second responsibility, which can sometimes be less obvious, is to ensure that you remain aware of, and manage, the wider process that you are working on. This means that you have the responsibility to ensure that others in your team remain on track and that tasks are being completed in a timely manner, even if they haven’t been assigned to you.

What's your background?

I grew up in a small town, just north of Wellington, called Otaki. It was a relaxed upbringing, where I was able to focus on having friends, playing sports etc. without having to focus too heavily on my schoolwork.

Following this, I went to the University of Otago, where I was able to have a unique experience, that was highly independent, allowing me to take responsibility for my life, both academically and otherwise. It was at University that I was able to consider what I wanted to do with my life / what I wanted to achieve.

I was also able to spend a semester abroad in Edinburgh studying, which allowed me to get a broader perspective on where life can take you and what is outside of your bubble (a great thing to do before starting a full-time job!)

I got my current role through the usual application process, going through interviews, and meeting the team. I have now been doing it for four months and have really been enjoying it.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes absolutely, I come from a different background to many of my colleagues and have found myself at no disadvantage. The key thing is that you are able to pick things up quickly, use your initiative, and are hardworking. These attributes will make up for any “lack” of skills you think you may have.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

My favourite thing about the job is the responsibility you get given. Even when you have only been there for a week, you are joining meetings and are considered a critical part of the team. At the same time, you always have the support that is needed when you aren’t sure of how to do something

What are the limitations of your job?

The key limitation of the job is primarily the hours that you work (evenings and sometimes weekends). While there is time for things outside of work, you will likelyl have to sacrifice some elements of your life outside of work.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

Just to enjoy yourself, and not take things too seriously. At the end of the day, how you do at university is not going to define how your life goes, and it is great to make the most of the free time you have while you are at that stage of life. Take opportunities outside of university, make lots of friends, and have experiences. If you try lots of things, then you will have a good idea of what you like in life, and what you don’t.
