NZME Graduate Programs & Internships

  • Media & Communications

NZME is a premier integrated media company, built on a legacy of award-winning journalism and broadcasting. We have a portfolio of over 40 radio, digital and print brands and we have 1200 employees working in 47 offices throughout the country. Some of our iconic brands include The NZ Herald, Newstalk ZB, Viva, ZM, The Hits, Radio Hauraki, Coast, Flava and OneRoof. As well as this we operate as a full-service agency, so when you think careers at NZME you're thinking across a vast array of roles from journalists, to digital producers and app developers, marketers, to HR/legal and graphic designers to accountants and pre-press operators. We have every aspect of media covered across all media platforms.

We’re an open, innovative and diverse culture aiming to be the home of the best talent in NZ. Our purpose is keeping Kiwi's in the know and we live and breathe our values to be curious, connected and confident; this means we think outside the square, challenge the status quo, solve it at the source and we're not afraid to ask questions and try new things. We strive for genuine career growth and development opportunities for our employees, we value reward and recognition and we encourage flexibility, inclusion, and diversity – we want our people to bring their whole selves to work!

Supporting young talent is really important to us and we run internship and work experience programmes in varying capacities across our departments as well as offering graduate and entry-level positions throughout the year. We aim to provide an invaluable learning experience for young people as they enter the workforce and as they build their careers in the media world.

We help young people to make a real impact by learning meaningful skills. Whether you’re a curious student or an ambitious graduate, our internships will see you gain meaningful experience working alongside some of the best minds in the industry, all whilst finding out what yours can really do.

Recruitment Process

Apply online - Once your application has been submitted, you should receive an email to confirm this and also an Employment Application form to fill in. A job advert is usually live for a few weeks or more dependent on number of applications received. Applications start being processed from once the ad becomes live until it's removed.

Update - Once your application has been reviewed, you will either receive a email letting you know if you have been shortlisted or not. If so, some hiring managers will call you at the earliest convenience to conduct a phone interview. Some may move to an in-person interview immediately. During interviews we will clarify your skills, experience, responsibilities, notice period and ask salary expectations. If you were not shortlisted, you should receive a email letting you know.

Further Interviews - If you have been successful in your phone screen or first interview, you may be invited along for further interviews with your potential new manager and other team members where they will tell you more about the role. This is your chance to ask any questions, show us your personality and talk us through specific experiences and examples. We will be covering behavioural based questions covering adaptability, culture add, collaboration, leadership and potential growth. Expect some role specific questions too.

Once again, if you have been successful at this stage - you may be invited back to NZME to meet the wider team you will be working with.  This is another chance for you to ask any questions you may have.

Background checks - At this point, we will be conducting reference checks and any other relevant checks such as credit, criminal, license checks etc. We will let you know exactly what we're checking beforehand so you're kept in the loop.

Hired - If you are successful in all of the above and our chosen candidate we will give you phone call to tell you the good news before you provide you with a written contract to review and sign.
