Join our Graduate Programme

Commencing February 2025 in Te Whanganui-a-Tara / Wellington, we invite you to be part of a cohort of 30 Engineering Graduates with various majors. You’ll gain a range of skills and put theory and first principles into practice while doing important work with a variety of different teams over your two-year rotational placement programme. Find out more at Transpower.co.nz/TranspowerGrads

Building relationships across the business, you'll rotate through different engineering teams. You'll spend time in placements with Service Providers and/or Engineering Consultants, visit sites to gain technical understanding and depth, and develop outstanding people skills along with a good awareness of internal and external customer needs.

The opportunity

As a Transmission Lines Programme participant, you will play a part in shaping the future of New Zealand's electricity industry and enabling a more sustainable energy future.

Based at our Wellington Waikoukou head office you will complete a circa two-year rotational programme, including a range of tactical and operational engineering placements in our Transmission Lines, Substations and Primary Assets teams, including Cost Estimation. You'll likely experience all stages of the project lifecycle from conception to delivery, through to planning maintenance of the assets.  This may require travel and a placement/s outside of Wellington.

You may be involved in:

  • Optimising New Zealand's overhead Transmission Line Network
  • Tower, pole, and cross arm design and/or replacement projects
  • Initiatives in sustainability and safety in design using PLS-CADD
  • Identifying and studying risks to primary assets, and diagnosing incidents
  • Cost Estimation for engineering projects from $250k to $100m plus
  • Defining and delivering improvement recommendations for our assets

What will you bring?

By December 2024 you’ll have completed a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Mechanical engineering or other relevant discipline e.g., Mechatronics, or Civil Engineering, Engineering Science or you may be completing your Masters, or further study in a relevant field.

You'll be achieving/have achieved a minimum B+/5.5 grade point average in your studies and demonstrate curiosity, outstanding written and verbal communication, and active listening.

Good analytical and problem-solving skills will support your love of detail-orientated work/study, but conversely, you'll be interested in the big picture, and future of energy, making a difference to Aotearoa and having a positive impact on the communities we serve.

While not essential, the following skills are a plus, so please tell us if you have:

  • Basic knowledge/experience of the New Zealand electricity supply industry
  • Skills in scripting/programming/coding
  • A foundational understanding of Transmission Assets
  • Proficiency in the use of relevant computer applications including MS Office
