Please describe the training programmes at your company and tell us what skills you've picked up.
We primarily learn our technical skills on the job as we work under the supervision of a senior. We do have a range of other training opportunities such as graduate conferences or lunch & learn development sessions with the entire graduate cohort, weekly online training sessions on a range of topics within my section (building services), as well as engineering equipment supplier companies coming in to give trainings.

My technical training typically occurs onsite/on the job by an experienced team member. I find this form of training incredibly helpful and necessary for success. My seniors will include training time on jobs to ensure i have support when doing something for he first time.

We have weekly lunchtime trainings, grad programme lunchtime sessions, and other company wise lessons like rainbow ally trainings, first aid training and Te Reo Maori class.

For a graduate program there seems to be very little structure in the program and the lunchtime sessions are not useful.

They have weekly training in the form of team meeting lectures, but it can barely be called training. No real formal training. A lot of it is using the skills you already have. mentoring is great as there is no course, so often you are left to your own. Only learning that happens is on the projects you are involved in

I think that the graduate cohort development programme is good to expose new grads to the business and the way that it operates. I feel that there could be some development in exposing the graduates to the wider professions that are provided within the business. I have been given some opportunity to participate in other internal and external formal training however this has been restricted to enable business profits to be met. With respect to training on the job, I had a great senior who was there to support and provide me with assistance but not all of the graduates within my team were fortunate enough to receive this. I think that there could be more formal job training provided especially in the initial months to provide graduates with the theory and practical training that is required for the job.

As a team we were not allowed to do training for a period of time. I raised along with my other grads multiple times how impactful this would be on us as we are at the start of our careers and trainings formal or not are important. I have been really let down with the technical training that has not been provided during my time so far at Beca and believe that in the future grads should have weekly training sessions to begin with.

My company offers a range of company wide training initiatives (business writing skills workshop, graduate information sessions once a month, graduate seminars 3x in the first two years), and within my team many lunchtime sessions teaching technical skills.

Onboarding Programmes - enable easy pickup of company practices and workflows. Pavement training suite - Internally run 5 week training programme on detailed pavement design run by industry-leading experts. Civil 3D training tutorials - Devotech. Great for learning basics of C3D operation.

Whole network of modules for literally any discipline. Knowledge centre on line full of standards and codes of practice that are easy to digest and navigate through. Proper course days, optional daily seminars on lessons learnt in projects all around the world, surrounded by 100s of experts with answers for pretty much everything while you work through projects.

I've benefited from diverse training and development programs at my company. This included a three-month one-on-one training for 12D in Wellington and initial AutoCAD training. We also have ongoing programs like civil 3D and pavement training, which have greatly enhanced my technical skills and proficiency in civil engineering. Additionally, on-the-job learning opportunities have improved my problem-solving and project management abilities.
