Pros & Cons

  • Amazing company culture ( respect each other, kindness, safety first)
  • The passion and attitudes that everyone has for what they do create a team environment in which you feel like your work is meaningful and productive. The work we do is able to be seen visibly in the community, adding to this.
  • Fulton Hogan I feel a large sense of pride being able to say I'm part of the organisation as Fulton Hogan does amazing things for the communities it is a part of.
  • Big company with lots going on so there are lots of opportunities to learn and grow and try different things. Good pride in the work we do.
  • Being able to move around the business and having a lot of opportunities to try different things as a graduate. Graduate summits to meet others and share experiences with people in a similar boat. Having the opportunities at these events to talk to people in higher positions and gain a wider perspective
  • Long working hours/weekend work
  • I have quite a long commute to work
  • Some stigma around working more hours each week than stated on contract. People ask questions once you leave before 5 p.m.
  • Not working in the city and in sometimes not-close locations.
  • Long hours

Career Prospects
The career progression within the company is well plotted, with clear targets and directions to achieve the next step of responsibility. And the company provides the required training in order to reach those targets.

We are a company that is very present in many communities around New Zealand. Many projects have been occurring in my region, such as tree plantings, penguin hut building, takahae release and care, local sponsorship and support

Culture
During office hours: collaborative, open door policy; no office hours; everyone is easily accessible; hot desks so people move around in the office and get to meet or sit with new people every day; after office hours: able to reach out to managers if needed; strict policy around no working after hours for better work-life balance; only working after hours when needed; every so often there will be a social hangout or team bonding time; structure and hierarchy; i.e., if you want, you can directly go speak to the CEO. You don't have to follow a hierarchy to be able to talk to someone, regardless of how superior they are. I find this refreshing Cooperation and teamwork - everyone is always willing and ready to step up and help out if needed Socialising - strong team banter

Diversity
There are no issues in this area. I am part of the Te Ara Mua Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging Committee, and as a DIB ambassador for Fulton Hogan, we are doing some great work in this space.

Basically, I do site engineering and am pretty comfortable looking after three crews at a time. Taking QA and updating to M-Files under an ITP, organising works to happen, writing method statements for works (completing full job packs), updating the daily diary with all the works that commenced that day, procuring materials for jobs coming up, and taking as-builts on the GPS whenever it is needed Just to name a few.

Manager has been a great mentor not only in my existence to this company; he's made us welcome in to this company; he's held sessions for graduates where he's able to apply his experience and knowledge in educating us on the processes and how we could manage. So far, we have managed to use email and Microsoft Teams to communicate when I need something or when there is somewhere I need to be. Recently, we had a performance that the company held once every year, which was good to recognise in some areas and set some goals for what’s to come in the next year.

Office Work Environment
Our office is in the working yard on the outskirts of the city. This makes it good to not encounter the heavy traffic flows. The building is fairly modern with all the facilities required. Dress code is tidy too casual as many people in the office are wearing hi-vis and work boots depending on their work for the day.

It is a big front of mind issue which is being worked on, certainly hard for the type of company but regular reviews of carbon data are done and new alternatives are always being introduced.
